The NFL Europe began in 1991 as the World League of American Football, with 10-teams competing in the United States and Europe. After a two-year hiatus
(1993-94) following the 1992 season, the league returned in 1995 as a six-team,
all-European venture, with five teams in Germany since 2005, and has existed in
that format through its final season in 2007. The Hamburg Sea Devils, who played their home games at Hamburg's AOL Arena, began on April 2, 2005, and on June 23, 2007, the Sea Devils won their first World Bowl Championship with a 37-28 victory over the defending champion Frankfurt Galaxy. It was also their last, as NFL Europa disbanded almost immediately following the game. As a result, the Sea Devils are the last team to win a WLAF / NFL Europe / NFL Europa game, ever!!
You might remember, The Sea Devils were brought to American media attention, when Thomas Herrion, a former Offensive Tackle allocated to the team by the San Francisco 49ers, died after a preseason game against the Denver Broncos in August 2005. In a tribute, his #68 was selected to be the number for the 2006 jerseys.
