The 1988 Notre Dame Fighting Irish met all challenges during a season that saw them match up against four different Top 10 opponents. After 12 games, ending with a 34-21 win over No. 3 West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl, Notre Dame claimed the National Championship with a perfect 12-0 record. Irish coach Lou Holtz's squad outscored their opponents 32.8 to 13.0 points per game. The offense was guided by a trio of players who rushed for over 600 yards apiece, led by QB Tony Rice (700 yards, 9 TDs). Raghib "Rocket" Ismail was a big play machine, averaging 27.6 yards per reception while averaging 36.1 yards per kickoff return, including two return TDs.
