Description

This iconic, HUGE 1987 Oklahoma Sooners Football "Big-Eight" Conference Championship Ring is a beautiful ring, manufactured by BALFOUR (Stamped: LGB - GTC w/ serial #'s engraved inside), and is approximately a Size 12.75 to 13 on the mandrel, plus weighs a hefty 33.1 grams on our scale! This very *SCARCE* ring is a Balfour salesman sample, with legendary Head-Coach Barry Switzer's name on the side, from the same exact mold used at the plant to produce the entire teams championship rings. In 29-years of collecting Championship Rings, this is the only sample we've seen of this particular OU ring. The 1987 Oklahoma Sooners Football Team posted an impressive 11-0 regular season record (a perfect 70 in the conference) in '87, on the way to another "BIG-8" Conference Title, under Head-Coach Barry Switzer, who took the helm, way back in 1973. Believe it or not, this was incredibly, Switzer's 12th Conference Title (his 4th consecutive conference title), and 8th undefeated conference record in 15-seasons! This awesome team was led by *All-Americans* Rickey Dixon (who won the Jim Thorpe Award), Mark Hutson, Keith Jackson, Dant Jones, and Darrell Reed. After going "Undefeated" in OU's eleven regular season games, the Sooners earned a trip to the "Orange Bowl" for an appearance against the Miami Hurricanes. During the season, Oklahoma faced three ranked opponents (In order, #12 Oklahoma State, #1 Nebraska, and #2 Miami). Both of the last two games were #1 vs. #2 matches with the last being the "National Title" game, in which OU endured its only loss of the season to the resulting National Champion Miami Hurricanes. Oklahoma was quite the juggernaut in '87, averaging 428.8 yards rushing per game with their potent wishbone offense. To Miami's credit, they were able to hold Oklahoma to just 179-yards on the ground, winning the game 20-14!
