The Nationals' road to the championship was one of the great comeback stories in baseball history. After beginning the season 19–31, Washington rallied to finish 93–69 and earn a National League Wild Card berth. The Nationals defeated the Milwaukee Brewers in the Wild Card Game, eliminated the 106-win Los Angeles Dodgers in a dramatic five-game NLDS, and swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS to advance to the World Series.
Washington then faced the 107-win Houston Astros in an unforgettable seven-game World Series. Remarkably, the visiting team won all seven games of the series — the first time that had ever happened in a best-of-seven postseason series in MLB history. The Nationals won Games 1 and 2 in Houston, lost all three games in Washington, then returned to Houston to win Games 6 and 7.
In doing so, the Nationals became the first team in World Series history to win the championship by winning all four of its games on the road. They completed the remarkable run with a 6–2 Game 7 victory on October 30, 2019, capturing the first World Series championship in Washington Nationals franchise history.
